Hello Sewing Friends! It’s Tira from Tira Cooks and I am so
excited to share my very first Fabricista make with you all! When I spotted
this white linen cotton blend with bold black and green printed illustrations I
immediately knew it was the perfect way to welcome spring. The combination of
linen and cotton keeps you cool during the day and comfortable as the evening
cools down truly the ideal spring fabric.
Can we take a moment to appreciate this print? Cheetah
print, a sun face, long stripes, and flowers all in one design. Everything you
would not expect to see together, but somehow it just works. What really drew
me in is the scale of the print it is bold enough that you can see every single
detail. Unexpected, maximalist, and done right.
Before cutting into anything, we cannot skip fabric prep!
Linen cotton blends must be pre-washed before cutting to prevent shrinkage. I
also recommend serging or zigzagging raw edges immediately to control the heavy
fraying that linen is known for. I used a 110/18 needle in my Juki DDL, which
is perfect for medium to heavier weight wovens. Now for my funny story my
Brother serger motor blew out right in the middle of this project! I had to run
to my local sewing machine shop and use their demo serger while I waited for my
new one to arrive. Thank goodness local sewing shops still exist they truly saved
this project.
The pattern I used is the No. 34 Mitchell Trousers by ClosetCore Patterns and this was my very first time making it! The Mitchell Trousers
are a classic high-waisted pleated trouser with a fly front zipper, a hidden
waistband, and optional back welt pockets. The pattern comes with two views
View A is a tapered leg and View B is a wide leg — and you can add an optional
adjustable waist tie to either. The instruction booklet included in the pattern
is incredibly detailed and easy to follow, which I really appreciated as a
first time Mitchell maker.
I chose View A the tapered leg with no adjustable waist tie
and with the back welt pockets included. I was heading to a special occasion
and View A reminded me of a modern elevated dress pant that still felt very
wearable. They came out absolutely perfect and I already know I will be making
more of these for my closet!
For sizing I cut a straight size 10 from the size chart and
did not need to make any pattern alterations which is honestly amazing for me
and made the whole process so much smoother! The welt pocket construction and
the front pleated pockets took the majority of my sewing time but were very manageable
by following the pattern instructions carefully. Both details came out
beautifully and were well worth the extra time.
The pattern and fabric were both from Fabric Mart and I love
every choice I made. The linen cotton blend was easy to sew with and felt even
better to wear. I hope you love this make as much as I do!
