Wool Takes Centre Stage at Functional Textiles Shanghai
Now a fixture on the international functional textiles calendar, FTS is part of a global series of ingredient sourcing trade shows that includes Performance Days in Munich. IWTO was there.
The International Wool Textile Organisation joined industry leaders from across the global textile supply chain at Functional Textiles Shanghai (FTS), held on 5–6 March 2026 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center. With an attendance of 8,474 visitors, the fair firmly established itself as Asia’s premier sourcing event for high-performance and sustainable textiles.
Now a fixture on the international functional textiles calendar, FTS is part of a global series of ingredient sourcing trade shows that includes Performance Days in Munich. As Charles Ross reported in OutdoorInsider Compass, FTS has evolved beyond its origins to become a destination in its own right. The event drew sourcing teams from major outdoor and performance brands.
This year’s edition featured a Day 0 pre-event programme, bringing together supply chain partners, brands and sustainability professionals for open dialogue on the future of functional textiles. Ross noted that attendees included a strong contingent of senior decision-makers. This reflectis the strategic importance the Chinese market places on sourcing conversations.
Wool in the Spotlight: IWTO Panel Discussion
IWTO was invited to moderate a dedicated panel discussion on wool’s role in the functional textiles sector. This was a fitting platform to explore wool’s growing relevance to China’s active and athleisure markets.
Chaired by Dalena White, IWTO Secretary General, the panel brought together textile experts from key parts of the wool supply chain:
- Jacques Ji, Deputy General Manager, Zhangjiagang Yangste Wool Combing
- Jim Chiang, Business Manager, Zhejiang New Chuwa Wool
- Julie Davis, Industry Development, Australian Wool Innovation Limited
- Sammy Ye, Head of Sales Asia, Suedwolle Group
The discussion reviewed wool’s natural performance properties, and why these characteristics, developed over millennia, make wool an ideal choice for activewear and athleisure.
Panellists also highlighted wool’s full supply chain traceability as a differentiating credential in a market where consumers and brands are increasingly scrutinising fibre provenance.
China’s Shifting Consumer Landscape
A central theme throughout the panel and wider fair conversations was the transformation underway in the Chinese consumer market. Post-pandemic, health and wellness have emerged as defining lifestyle priorities. Reports suggest 89% of Chinese consumers adopted healthier habits during 2024. Walking, running, team sports and personalised fitness routines are all on the rise. With them comes demand for high-quality, functional apparel.
In line with that trend, circular knitting companies are increasingly incorporating natural fibres such as wool, into their collections. Producers traditionally focused on cotton are exploring wool blends to meet demand from outdoor brands and younger consumers. Even FTS attendees expressed a clear preference for casual and dual-purpose clothing, shifting away from formal business attire.
Innovation and the Road Ahead
The fair also featured discussions on ongoing innovation in wool processing, including advances in machine-washable treatments and fibre preparation techniques. Wool was well aligned with the sustainability values at the heart of the event’s philosophy (all exhibitors are selected on the basis of improved performance or reduced environmental impact).
Overall, the conversations at FTS Shanghai reflect a broader momentum: as the functional textiles sector grows, natural fibres with proven performance credentials are gaining ground. For the wool industry, the Chinese market and forums like FTS represent a significant and expanding opportunity.
